Chapter 23

Hailey’s pov 🔥

I was sitting in a back booth at the Starbucks a block away from my office.

Roman was sitting opposite me, nervously sipping on his coffee. All the time I had this weird feeling that I was being watched.

“Hailey…” Roman started. “I know I have wronged you and there’s nothing I can do to change that…but I…”

He trailed off. He nervously moved in his seat, struggling to find the right words. I said nothing and we sat in an awkward silence for a while.

“I regret what I did every single day. Tell me what I can do to earn your forgiveness,” he said after a while.

“Nothing. There’s nothing you can do now,” I told him. He looked away in pain.

“I’ve closed that chapter, Roman. I’ve left it all behind me,” I continued.

“I know. You’ve come a long way,” he said. “But you wouldn’t have had to if I hadn’t messed up.”

“But you did,” I replied in a monotone voice.

“But I did,” he sighed. “And I’ll forever regret it. I keep thinking about what could have been. We could have been a family, with a home. And our children…”

My eyes widened. I always wondered if he blamed me for what happened. Till this day, I felt responsible for losing my baby. Did he think the same?

He may have betrayed me, but it was still his child and did he hold me accountable for the miscarriage?

“Do you blame me for losing our baby?” I asked in a small voice, unable to meet his gaze.

“What, no!” He said. “How could I… It was not your fault Hailey. If anything, it was mine. Everything comes down to me being unfaithful.”

When I heard him say that, it was like a weight had been lifted off my heart. Sure everyone had told me the same thing, but hearing it come from him was different.

Maybe it was what I needed to hear from him all these years ago, to finally forgive myself.

“Hm..,” I nodded his way. “But you can have that with Gina.”

“I don’t think so,” he said. “I never seen her after that day.”

My head shot up towards him. A lot of time after our break-up I spent wondering if he was happy with her, if she was better for him than I and all those stupid stuff.

But I never thought that he would end it with her like that. Not that I cared obviously. I was done with them.

“I thought you loved her,” I said simply, not showing any emotion.

“I never loved anyone other than you,” he said and took my hand in his, but I pulled back. “Gina.. what happened was not love, it was a mistake. I realised that too late.”

We spoke for a while. I realised that he truly regretted his mistake and his guilt was haunting him, holding him back from moving on in life.

That’s why he sought me out, so he could repent and find peace.
——————————

After the meeting with Roman I was heading out of the Starbucks when my phone beeped with a message.

I stopped walking to reach in my purse and retrieve my phone when someone bumped into me from the behind. I turned to apologise,

“I’m so sorry… Nathan?” I was stumped seeing him here.

“Oh… hey hi,” he said nervously.
“What are you doing here?” I asked the obvious question.

“Oh just grabbing some coffee,” he said but I thought he was lying. Lawyer’s instinct.

“At a Starbucks so far away from your office?” I raised an eyebrow.

“I was in the area,” he replied cooly.
I could tell he was hiding something. Was it possible that he were here with some woman and didn’t want me to know?

Who am I kidding, this is the same guy who slept with a different girl every night in the room next to mine.

I came to this place every other day and I never saw him here before.

He was definitely here for some fishy reason and I wanted to know. That and the creepy feeling I was having of being watched since I got in this cafe.

“You know if you were here with another woman, I won’t tell on her,” I told him trying to pry out the real reason he was in the same cafe at the same time where I was having breakfast with my ex.

“What are you trying to imply?” He asked getting worked up.

“That I’m cheating on my girlfriend? I wasn’t here with any woman, I was just watching you!”

What the hell?!
As soon as the words left his mouth he realised he was busted. He looked at me sheepishly.

A part of me was furious that he was prying in my personal space but another part was… excited? I didn’t know what for.

Anyway, choosing to ignore the excited part I focused on the furious part.

“What the hell do you mean by that?” I yelled at him causing the people around us to look at us annoyed.

Nathan sent them an apologetic smile and then dragged me outside the cafe.

“Answer me Nathan, what business do you have spying on me like that?!” I yelled a bit softer this time, yanking my arm away from his grip.

“Whoa, calm down Hermione Granger, take it easy,” he said and held his hands up.

I took a deep breath to calm myself. I hated it when people poked their nose in my life, it was absolutely unacceptable to me. I was very particular about my privacy.

“I knew you were meeting with your douche ex today,” he started. “So I came here because I didn’t want you to be alone with him, incase anything happened.”

“You thought he’d attack me somehow?” I asked incredulously.

“No, not like that. I meant if you needed some support, like emotionally or….well, I just wanted to be here for you.”

I was left speechless. I didn’t know what to make of what he just told me. Also, I didn’t know if he was pitying me or was genuinely concerned for me.

Yesterday when I confined in him, I didn’t imagine he would have been actually hearing me out.

“Well…I, I didn’t tell you that because I wanted your sympathy,” I defended myself.

“I know,” he whispered. “You don’t need sympathy but you’re a strong woman Hailey, and proud, who won’t ask for help even if she needs it.”

“I don’t need your help, I’m fine,” I said not knowing what to make of all this new information.

He wasn’t lying, of that I was certain, but did he really mean what he was saying?

“Maybe not, but I’m here for you. I need you to know that,” he told me.

“Why?” I asked still refusing to believe that he was suddenly concerned about me. “Till yesterday you weren’t bothered if I needed help or was ok.”

“Till yesterday I didn’t see any other side of you other than strong, confident and intimidating.

You were always so put together that I would never have imagined you had to deal with such pain and suffering.

I guess everyone has a vulnerable side to them.” He said looking me straight in the eye.

“If you must know, I’m fine,” I told him after a while.

“That I could see,” he said. “You’ll were chatting pretty normally. Why were you even seeing him in the first place?”

“I didn’t realise I was answerable to you,” I said arching an eyebrow. I didn’t want to answer his question so I was just finding my way around it.

“You’re not,” he stated. “I was just asking out of curiosity.”

“I had my reasons,” I told him. “We are on good terms now.”

“But he hurt you,” he said confused. “How can you forgive him for that.”

“I didn’t say I did. I’m just not holding a grudge over it. I’ve put it behind me and let go.”

He stared at me in a daze for a long time. We were still standing outside the cafe and people were walking past us on the sidewalk.

That’s when my phone rang snapping us out of our trance.

“It’s my secretary,” I told him. “I have to leave, I’m getting late.”

“Yeah, sure. I’ll see you around.”
When we parted ways, I was left confused as to where I stood in my relationship with my husband.

Sometimes we were fighting than we were bonding, we were sharing stuff with each other than we were ignoring the other’s existence,

we couldn’t stand each other sometimes but we were still looking out for the other. This was hella confusing.

But in the pit of my stomach, there was a giddy feeling that I hadn’t felt in a long time.
Unbeknownst to my knowledge, some new found feelings were growing in my heart.

—————————

It’s been a couple of days since the day I met up with my ex and then had that weird encounter with my husband. I hadn’t spoken with Nathan since then.

My days were really busy between my three jobs and our grandparents were also keen on making me plan my upcoming reception party, something I really dreaded.

I couldn’t bare to think of what my life would look like when everyone knew that I was Mrs Nathan Rodriguez and not Ms Hailey Anderson.

Nathan enjoyed a much more social and public life than I, living in the limelight with paparazzi following his every move.

I on the other hand, preferred the silent life away from all the buzz.

Right now, I was in my office at BEAUTIFUL EVENTS, going over the financials. It was a busy season and there was a lot of work to do.

As I was checking the file, my P.A Joshua knocked on the door and came in before I could bid him enter.

He had a nervous look on his face but hid it with a smile.

“How you doing?” He asked in a light tone, imitating my favourite friend’s character, Joey.

“I hope you came here for business because if not please leave, I’m really busy,” I told him in my ‘boss’ tone.

He pouted but then turned serious. He took out a cream file with my publication company logo on it, and slid it across the table towards me.

“You need to take a look at this,” he said in a grave, no-nonsense voice.

I picked up the file and it was an original rough copy of an unpublished article yet to be edited, written by one of my journalist for the celebrity newsletter section of my weekly magazine.

It was actually an interview and when I saw the name of the person being interviewed and the content of the article, I was shocked.

“What the hell is this?!” I demanded, putting down the file in anger. “How did it happen?”

“She herself contacted the magazine and set up the interview,” he informed me, adding to my growing rage. “Said she had some big news to share.”

“When did this interview take place?” I asked

“This morning,” he said. It was evening now. “I only found out this early because I may or may not be sleeping with the concerned journalist.”

I arched an eyebrow at that. I had never heard about Josh’s person life before nor his dating history. All I knew was that he wasn’t married.

“What? I have a life too, you know,” he said.

“Anyway, back to the topic, how many people know about this?” I asked him

“At this publication? Only the journalist who wrote this, but I can get her to keep quiet,” he assured.

“What do you mean, ‘at this publication?'” I asked in disbelief. “Who else did she give this interview to?”

“The interview was exclusive, only for us, but a journalist at another magazine may have been tipped off about the news,”

“What?” I screamed. “Who, which magazine?”

“Our biggest rivals,” he said. “But, before you scream again, I may have something for you.”

“Shoot,” I gritted out.

“So this journalist who has been tipped off, I did a little research on her.

She isn’t too keen on writing about celebrity gossip and wants to make a career writing about politics.

But unfortunately, the magazine she works for won’t let her write anything else other than celebrity gossip, something she loathes.”

“Contact her and offer her a six month contract with us,”I told him.

“Provided she quit her job today and can join us tomorrow. That way she won’t be able to hand in her article.

Deal with it as you like, but this article should not be published and no one should find out about it either.”

“On it boss,” he said.

——————————–

Right now I was storming through the hallway of an elegant, posh office building.

As soon as Josh left my office, I grabbed the article file and my car keys and drove here to this office in haste. I had some confronting to do.

I stopped to ask for directions to my destination at the reception.

The young woman over there looked terrified of me, which wasn’t surprising as I probably looked like an angry bull about to create a havoc.
“B-but h-he isn’t e-expecting anyone, now ma’am,” she sluttered.

“I don’t care,” I growled and headed towards the direction she gave me.

When I reached the top floor, it wasn’t really difficult to find the CEO’s office as it was the only one on the floor.

The blond haired secretary outside the cabin door was dressed as if she was in a club rather than a workspace, in a tight fitting dress that ended mid thigh and was low cut so that the top of her cleavage was exposed.

She was sitting back in her chair, talking seductively on the phone and barely even noticed me until I stormed past her.

When she saw me head towards her boss’ office, she put the phone down and called out to me to stop, but I didn’t.

I swung the office doors open, not bothering to knock and stormed into the office with the blonde secretary hot at my heels.

“I’m sorry sir, but I tried to stop her,” the secretary tried to explain.

“Do you want me to call security?” She asked.

“No, we’ll be fine, why don’t you give us some time alone?” Her boss told her.

Nathan seemed shocked at the sudden intrusion when I stormed into his office, as he looked up from his laptop, but he quickly regained his composure.

As soon as his secretary left, a smug smile took over his features.

“Ms Anderson, I’m afraid you’ll have to take an appoint-” he started, mockingly repeating my words to him when he stormed into my office,

but was cut short when I threw the file in my hand at his face.

The file his him in the chest and threw him off as he tried to regain his balance in his seat while holding the file and looking pissed.

“What the hell?” He yelled.

Exactly Nathan,” I yelled back. “What the hell? Can you please explain to me what’s in that folder.”

He seemed annoyed and pissed but nevertheless quietly opened the folder. I leaned on the front of the large table, facing him.

“What the heck is this?” He mumbled but I didn’t respond to him.

I stayed quiet as he slowly began reading the contents of the file.

His eyes grew wide in shock as he went over what was written.

“What the hell?” He repeated once again. “Did she really do this? How, why?”

“You tell me,” I told him. “Did you know about this, have any idea about it, did you even say what she says you said?”

“No, of course not. I had no idea about it, I would never allow it,” he said standing up.

“I didn’t know she was about to do something like this, neither did I say the things she claims I did.”

“Nathan, your mistress just gave an interview to a journalist, claiming the two of you are planning on getting engaged, weeks before our reception party announcing our marriage to the world!” I furiously yelled at him.

“You’ll have to do better than the plain, ‘i didn’t know’ excuse.”

“Hannah must have had her reasons,” he reasoned. “She was upset about the whole party thing and this may be her way of acting out.”

“Acting out? What is she, five? And that doesn’t excuse her going to the press, rattling us out! It could have been disastrous for both of our families if that was published, be thankful I caught it.

Do you even realise what was about to happen? What could have been the consequences?” I questioned him.

“I do, and I’ll talk to her I promise,” he assured. “I’ll make sure something like this never happens again.”

“Oh you better do, cause if she pulls out something like this again or the word about your extramarital affair gets out, you’ll be in deep shit and I’ll wash my hands off it,” I told him.

“It wont happen. And more like, we’ll both be in deep shit. We’re in this together. This could affect you too,” he said smugly.

“Oh I highly doubt it,” I said confidently. “If this news had become public then you would find me suing you for adultery.

But I wouldn’t be going down with you and that’s a promise.”

And with that I stormed out of his office, leaving him with his mouth hung open.
