Chapter 17

Hailey’s pov 🔥

There was a loud sound ringing repeatedly, waking me from my sleep.

My eyes slowly fluttered open and my head was heavy and hurting.

I was facing the aftermath of yesterday’s drinks.

Gosh I needed an advil ASAP, but first someone shut that damn phone that was going off.

I twisted and turned and finally got my hands on the phone which was on the bedside table. It wasn’t mine but I answered it anyway.

“Hailey Anderson,” my voice came out as a rough croak.

“Ah Ms Anderson,” the voice came from the other end spoke.

“We were calling Mr Rodriguez to say that the flight will be ready to leave in an hour.”

“The flight?” I asked, trying to make sense of everything since my brain was on lockdown.

“Um..the private jet back to New York?” He told me.

“Oh..yea, of course,” I replied. “I’ll tell him.” I said and cut the call.

I rolled over to the other side and saw Nathan, passed out.

I pushed him, trying to wake him up hitting him with the pillow. He stirred and his eyes slowly opened.

I sat up using my hands and elbows to pull myself in a sitting position.

When I sat straight, the duvet fell from my body to reveal my naked body save for my lace bra and panty.

My eyes widened in horror and throat went dry. I looked back at Nathan to see that he was staring at my body and his face mirrored my expression.

I looked to see that he too was only wearing his underwear.

Dread settled in the pit of my stomach. Before anything could be said and done, I wrapped myself in the blanket and dashed to the bathroom.

I turned on the shower and leaned with my hands on the sink, looking at myself in the mirror and trying to remember the events of last night, but in vain.

We couldn’t have… could we? No, this wasn’t right.

But we were still in our underwear so that means we couldn’t have done the deed, right?

I wracked my head, trying to remember what happened last night, but I was too hungover to remember a thing.

I stripped down and got in the shower, letting the water calm me down.

After a while I felt a bit better and a little less hungover.

My brain was still searching for the details of last night.

I remember the pub, the drinks, the games, getting drunk, the elevator, the kiss,…the KISS?

Oh god! I felt like banging my head on the bathroom wall. What had I done? This was not supposed to happen.

But try as I may, I couldn’t remember anything after the kiss.

But I had a gut feeling that I didn’t have sex with him last night.

And after analysing everything I was certain. First, like I said, we were in our underwear and we couldn’t have put that back on in our state.

Second, I wasn’t feeling sore anywhere in my body.

No, I wasn’t a virgin, but I hadn’t had sex in a long time, so if my muscles were stretched last night, I would have felt sore or something.

Besides, there was no residue or cum anywhere on my body to state otherwise.

So I concluded that nothing happened last night. It was little consolation, but I stuck to it.

After finishing my buisness in the bathroom, I wrapped a bathrobe around my body and after hesitating a bit, I stepped out.

Nathan had put on a shirt and shorts and was hurriedly throwing some clothes in the suitcase.

After standing there awkwardly for a bit, I decided to break the silence.

“The plane will be ready to leave in…thirty minutes,” I told him after glancing at the watch.

He merely nodded without even looking at me. I guess it was awkward for the both of us.

I hurried to the closet and got ready in a haste. After that I packed whatever was remaining I my small duffel bag.

Good thing I had packed most of my things yesterday.

I remained in the closet to avoid Nathan since I didn’t want any uncomfortable situation just yet.

When it was time to leave, I came out to see Nathan was dressed and ready.

By the looks of it, he had taken a quick shower. I handed my luggage to some people and took out a much needed advil from my handbag and popped it in my mouth, successfully avoiding Nathan who was giving people some instructions.

The car ride to the airport was silent, none of us ready to break the ice first.

Once we got in the plane, we sat as far as possible from each other.

After three beautiful days in London, getting to know each other and bonding with one another, we were back at square one.

I was internally chiding myself for my drunken mistake.

I stole a glance over to where he was sitting and saw him frowning at something on his phone.

He seemed to be in a foul mood having snapped at the female airhostess and rebuked her seductive advances.

I thought about the kiss and how his lips felt on mine. No.. don’t think about that.

Don’t think about that. I reminded myself. It was all a mistake.

These last three days doesn’t change anything. We haven’t reached there yet.

We aren’t even proper friends. And right now, after yesterday’s debacle, I don’t even know where we stand in our relationship.

We landed on New York soil and boy was I glad to be back home. We got in the car and drove for Nathan’s mansion.

When the car pulled up at the front porch, I moved to open my door only to be stopped by a hand over mine. Correction, I was stopped by Nathan’s hand pulling mine back.

I turned to look at his face to see a cold look in his eyes. He quickly pulled his hand back from mine, as if the contact burnt him.

We had been quiet the whole time, ignoring each others presence and enduring a rather uncomfortable silence.

The tension between us was palpable but still neither one of us were ready to be the one to break the ice first.

“Whatever happened between us..or didn’t happen,” he started finally, “well, forget about it.

Nothing changes between us. You are still the unwanted wife, I’m still in love with someone else and our marriage is still a sham.

We can never be anything more.

Yesterday was a drunken mistake that shouldn’t have happened and would not have happened if I were sober.

So don’t get any ideas in your head. You will never mean anything more in my life than an unwanted burden that was forced upon me.”9
His voice was sharp and filled with venom and malice for me as his words settled in and cut like daggers. Before I could even form a response, he was gone from the car, leaving me to ponder over everything he had said.

I went to work on Friday since I had been off for a week and needed to catch up with everything. I was going over a case file, when the door to my office opened and in came Josh.
“Do I have to remind you everytime to knock before you enter?” I asked annoyed, “I could have been with someone or doing something.”
“Doing something like what?” He asked suggestively. I shook my head. I swear he was the only one who dared to take that tone and attitude with me.
“What do you have for me?” I asked. He handed me a navy blue envelope with my name printed on it in gold colour.
“Compliments of Mr. Jack Davis,” he said. “The party is tomorrow.”
“Tomorrow? Isn’t that a short notice?”
“Well, the invite came last Saturday but you were not here so I held on.
“I took the liberty to go shopping and get you a beautiful gown since I am the best damn PA in the whole city” he said giving himself a pat on the back.
I chuckled at his antics but thanked him anyway. I was grateful to have it and I would back up his claim of being the best PA. He really was the best at what he did, what with being trained by my grandpa and all. And no, before you ask, he is not gay! He just loves fashion and stuff. Who needs a girlfriend when you have a PA like him to rely on for fashion advice and shopping?3
“So how was your trip to London?” He asked, making himself comfortable in the couch, opposite me.

I just shrugged, not wanting to talk about it.

“Nathan will be attending tomorrow’s party too, so maybe you could go together?” He asked.

“Come now Josh, you know that is not going to happen. We aren’t like that.”

“If that’s the case, then you could ask Harry to be your date,” he suggested, “he’s got an invite too you know.”

“Why can’t I go by myself?” I asked. “Do I need a man by my side to look pretty?”

“Oh come on!” He groaned. “You’re no fun. You should give the press something to talk about. A date could set the gossip mill churning.”

“Nope, I’ll pass,” I told him and he sighed.

“Also, you should know that the firm is planning on throwing a party somewhere in a couple of weeks to celebrate the merger and officially becoming ‘Brown Smith & Kane'” he told me.
“The senior partner position you’ve been chasing? It will most probably be announced at the party.”

“Good gracious! How many more parties?!” I rubbed the bridge of my nose.

“Don’t worry, I’ll pick you another dress” he said getting up. “Oh and don’t forget, I made an appointment with the hair and makeup artist for tomorrow.”

“Thanks Josh.”

It was the night of the party. As I arrived at the hotel where the party was to take place, I saw that a lot of paparazzi were present at the place. Suck parties always drew a lot of media attention.

I looked out of the window of my car and saw Nathan and Hannah at the top of the stairs posing for the cameras. My heart sank but in my mind I was furious.

I stepped out of the car and the cameras flashed at me.

I smiled at them and making a point not to look in the direction of my husband, I walked forward a little bit only to be stopped by the paparazzi calling my name and asking for a photo to which I obliged.

As I stood posing for the cameras, I felt an arm snake around my waist.

I turned to look at Harry who was looking dapper in his tux and sporting his signature smile.

“Hey there beautiful,” he whispered in my ears as I blushed a little at his compliment. We posed together for the cameras as the paparazzi went wild asking us all sorts of questions, if we were together, what was our relationship, were we dating, for how long has it been going on, blah blah. Question we obviously didn’t answer but just smiled and brushed them off.

We entered the hotel together, arm in arm and as a couple. I must say, the decoration and everything was spectacular. It was all in navy blue and gold colours. As Harry and I entered, many heads snapped in our direction to look at us. I know we made quite the couple, the two of us.

I was dressed in a black dress, Josh had picked for me. He was good at this and he also knew my style. My hair was expertly pulled in a neat bun and diamond studs adorned my ears. My face was painted in exquisite yet minimal make-up, nothing too heavy to make me feel uncomfortable and I wore a pair of really high black heels.

Jack greeted us and pulled me in a hug and shook Harry’s hand.

“I’m so glad you too could make it,” he said in a cheerful voice. “My, don’t you look lovely together! Simply beautiful.”

I just smiled and didn’t bother correcting him. Nathan was standing nearby and jack’s voice was loud enough for him to hear. If he could play it this way then so could I.
As if on cue, Harry’s arm on my waist pulled me closer to him as he spoke to Jack.
“Well she’s the beauty, I’m just the lucky man,” he said with a chuckle and we joined him.

Jack led us inside and we made conversation with the other men and women present there. Harry didn’t leave my side even once. From the corner of my eye I could see Nathan was also conversing with a group of men and Hannah was on his arm, clinging to him as usual.

When the dance began, Harry asked me to dance with him and I agreed. As he twirled me on the dancefloor, I caught him studying me intently and lost deep in thought.

“Penny for your thoughts?” I asked him, “What are you thinking?”

He twirled me around and then pulled me closer to him before answering my question.

“I was thinking of your husband and how he’s such an utter fool,” he replied. He still didn’t know who my husband was.

“Life gave him such a precious jewel and yet he doesn’t even know it’s value.

“How can someone reject someone like you is beyond me.

He has to be retarded I swear. Ever since you entered this room, every man and even many women have taken a second look at you, checking you out.

Men are dying for the chance to just know you, or have a word with you. And then there is that husband of yours. I swear to you Hailey, if you were mine, I’d hold you tight and never let you go.”

The dance came to an end then. Harry had leaned in closer to me when he said that last line and now he stood properly and let go of my hand. I was still trying to grasp what he had just said of me being his when I heard someone clearing their throat behind me.

I turned at the intruder, only to be greeted by the handsome face of my cousin Ethan Knight.

“Hey there beautiful Hailey,” he spoke causing my face to light up and break into a smile.

“Ethan!!” I squeaked with joy.

“Hi, my name is Ethan Knight, I’m Hailey’s cousin,” he introduced himself to Harry, “And you are?”

“Harry Lawrence,” he replied as they shook hands. “I’m Hailey’s…friend.”

“I see,” came Ethan’s reply. “Do you mind if I have this next dance with my beautiful cousin?”

“No, ofcourse not. Go ahead.” Harry told him and then turned to me. “I’ll see you around ok.”

With that he left and I pulled Ethan in a tight hug.
“Oh I missed you so much,” I told him. “How have you been?”

“Well, I’ve been good, great actually. The buisness has never been better, I just got back from an awesome vacation cum buisn
ess trip

Australia was simply splendid, I broke up with my cheating girlfriend for good and life as a single is just fantastic.”

He then proceeded to tell me about his trip to Australia and then how he caught his bimbo girlfriend in bed with another man.

I wasn’t upset about that since I never liked that girl, she was too whiny and clingy and was only using him.

In the end even he realised that and was only too glad when he got an excuse to get rid of her.

“You know I’m really angry with you,” I told him as the song ended and another one began.

“And why is that baby sister?”

You’ve been in New York for a while now but it never once occured to you to come and see me?” I pouted for extra effect.

“Oh baby sister, I was really busy! I got caught up in a lot of work,” he said.

“Yes, busy buying shares in my husband’s company,” I replied. “Did you think I wouldn’t find out.”

“Oh no dear Hailey Bailey, I know you too well to know you would find out,” he laughed. “I was just wondering when.”

“What are you upto Ethan,” I asked him seriously. “What are you and Ace planning?”

“Planning? Hails what are you talking about? We are not doing anything!”

He said feigning innocence, but I being a lawyer knew better than to believe that.

“I know you two are upto something, don’t think you can fool me,” I told him but he just chuckled.

“We haven’t done anything yet Hails,” he said “but we can and we will, if that so called husband of yours tries any stunts with you.”

“Lay off of him,” I sighed

“No babe, not a chance,” he said gravely. “I will not tolerate anyone walking all over you, or playing with you and Nathan will have to learn that.”

I knew that trying to talk him out of it would be fruitless so I gave up.

I don’t know what exactly is their plan, but I get the idea that the shares are a leverage again Nathan.

I dropped the topic and we once again went back to our cheerful conversation.

I excused myself from Ethan after some time and went to the bar to get a drink, when I hear a voice speak with thick Italian accent from right behind me.

“She walks in beauty, like the night1

Of cloudless climes and starry skies;

And all that’s best of dark and bright

Meet in her aspect and her eyes;

Thus mellowed to that tender light

Which heaven to gaudy day denies.”

I turn around and come face to face with a rather dashing looking Italian man who looks familiar but I can’t remember where I’ve seen him.

He approaches me and then continues,

“And on that cheek, and o’er that brow,

So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,

The smiles that win, the tints that glow,

But tell of days in goodness spent,

A mind at peace with all below,

A heart whose love is innocent”

As he finishes, he took my hand in his and kissed the back of it seductively while looking into my eyes as I blushed ever so lightly.

“Signorina,” he whispered ever so softly.

“I don’t think you remember me, but we met at the tennis match where you so skillfully won the tournament…and my heart.” He said.

“As a matter of fact, I do remember you Mr Russo,” I told him, finally remembering him. “And I also recognise that piece of poetry from Lord Byron.”

“It’s good to know you remember me,” Michael replied humorously, “and you know your poets, signorina.”
(Signorina- Italian for a woman who is not married)

I wanted to correct him that it was signora and not signorina but then thought against it.+

“That I do, signor,” I replied. “She walks in beauty by Lord Byron was one of my all time favorites. I had once even written a paper on it, back in high school.”

“That’s truly wonderful to here. I rarely meet people who share my interest in poetry,” he said enthusiastically. “Tell me, do you write poetry as well?”

“A little,” I blushed, not really used to talking about my hobbies. “It’s nothing much really.”

“I’m sure it’s something, if your beauty, elegance and grace is anything to go by.”
“Do you flirt with every woman, signor?” I asked.

“Only the ones who interest me, or intrigue me,” he paused and then, “also if they are beautiful and hot ones.”

I let out a laugh and asked, “Which category do I fall in then?”

“That’s the thing signorina,” he replied in a sexy voice, “never has a woman before you fit in all those categories.”

I paused for awhile not sure how to reply to that. His gaze was intent and behind the humour I could sense he was dead serious.

I didn’t want to lead him on for nothing but I didn’t want to tell him I’m married either.

“So what is a lady as pretty as yourself doing here alone?” Michael asked saving me from forming a reply to his previous statement.

The pretty lady got tired of being twirled around on the dancefloor and decided she needed a drink,” I replied smartly.

He chuckled and led me to the bar.
“Champagne, wine, beer?” He asked.

“Scotch please.”
He gave me an amused look but nevertheless ordered my scotch and whiskey for himself.

“I never took you to be one for the drinks, my lady,” he told me.

“Does that surprise you signor? Do you disapprove?” I challenged him.

“Surprise, sure. I didn’t see that coming,” he spoke honestly, “as for disapproving, it’s quite the opposite actually. I love a woman who can drink.”

“Cheers to that,” I said and raised my glass.+

As I raised my glass to my lips I heard a voice I was dreading all night.

“Mr Russo,” my so called husband said. “It’s good to see you again. I hope I’m not interrupting anything.”

“Mr. Rodriguez,” Michael greeted as the two men shook hands. “Oh no, you didn’t interrupt anything. I was just trying to charm my way into Ms Anderson’s heart.”

“Hailey,” he nodded towards me.

“I see you two are well acquainted,” Michael noted.

“Family friends,” I told him before Nathan could answer him. “Our grandparents our good friends.”

“Now that’s something” he replied. “Mr Rodriguez here can help me out with the lady then? Put in a good word for me.”

“Now I didn’t really take you to be someone who needs help getting a woman,” I responded.

“Does that surprise you signorina? Do you disapprove?” He repeated my words from earlier.

I gave a small laugh as he smiled.

“Mr Rodriguez here is trying to talk me into buisness I assume,” he turned towards Nathan.

“Yes, so I was hoping,” Nathan replied honestly.

“Then you’re going to be disappointed,” Michael chuckled. “How can I indulge buisness when I have such a pretty lady infront of me?”

“No please, you’ll go ahead. I don’t want to be a hindrance,” I was suddenly uncomfortable of him flirting with me infront of my husband.

“Nonsense!” He exclaimed. “A woman as beautiful as you could never be a hindrance.

Infact I was hoping you’d help me out with my business here in New York.

Mr Davis spoke highly of you. What do you think Mr Rodriguez?”

“I think Hailey is a fantastic lawyer,” Nathan told him. “I worked with her when she settled the merger between Mr Davis and I.”

“Well, what do you say, signorina?” Michael asked.

“I say that I’m really looking forward to working with you,” I answer him.

“Fantastic,” his response a bit over enthusiastic.

“Mr Rodriguez, I hope to have a meeting with you soon so we can discuss your proposition. With the guidance of my new attorney here maybe we could get to something?”

“That would be great!” Nathan said excitedly as he shook Michael’s hand.

“Now I must take my leave of you people,” he said apologetically.

“I look forward to working with you Mr Russo,” I told him as he looked towards me.

“Call me Michael,”
“Then you must call me Hailey,” I replied and he grinned.

“And I look forward to hearing your poems soon, Hailey,” he said as I blushed while he kissed the back of my hand and with a nod towards Nathan, he was gone.

I turned back to see Nathan glaring daggers at me but I just turned and left, not bothering with him.

Hailey he will come back don’t worry 😭😭😭
