Chapter 15

Hailey’s pov 🔥

I woke up to an empty bed. Nathan was gone and I was thankful.

I don’t know how I would have handled the awkward situation.

I went about my morning routine and when I was done it was still early.

I got dressed and looked outside the window at the beautiful view of busy London.

People were getting to work, cars and buses moved up and down the busy London roads and the cafe down the street was bustling with people.

For today, I picked a black tank top with matching dark green denim skirt and jacket and white kicks.

I threw my hair in a neat ponytail and wore my gold hoop earrings.

I had planned my first day in London in advance.

After I was done, I left the hotel and walked to a local cafe nearby.

The atmosphere in London was amazing, I was loving it.

The cafe was not too small but it wasn’t exactly big either.

However, it was homely and welcoming. I sat down on a chair and ordered a full English breakfast.

I was in a mood to really have a full English experience.

I had been to London on a few occasions, but they were all work related and I never got the chance to really enjoy my time here.

So this time I decided it would be different.

The breakfast arrived and I had to admit, it was a little too much for me.

It consisted of bacon, egg, sausages, toast, baked beans, tomatoes and mushrooms, along with a cup of tea.

The Brits sure know how to stay healthy, this breakfast was really nutritious.

I dug into breakfast and it was awesome. I almost forgot my inability to eat so much and devoured everything like a starved cat. It was so good.

And I’m usually a coffee person but tea wasn’t so bad either. Infact I preferred tea more than coffee now.

After breakfast, I spent the day sightseeing in London.

I had no idea where Nathan was, but I didn’t care. I was enjoying the sights of London all by myself.

Instead of taking a car or a cab, I rode the iconic red double decker bus in London.

The first place I visited was the historic tower of London.

I spent over an hour touring the place and snapping pictures.

From the 17th century Line of Kings with its remarkable displays of royal armaments and armour to the famous Crown Jewels exhibition,

this placewas a wonderful World Heritage site and I learnt so much over there.

As I was snapping some pictures on my camera, I felt someone’s arm snake around my waist and quickly turned around and slapped the person.

“Jeez woman!” My husband cursed while rubbing his cheek.

He was wearing an olive green polo shirt with black skinny jeans and white sneakers.

Black shades over his eyes and his hair was messy giving him a laid back look.

Again, we had managed to wear matching outfits without even knowing it.

“What do you think you were doing?” I demanded.

But instead of answering me, he turned around and signalled for a man in drivers outfit to come forward. He took out his phone and gave it to the man.

“My grandparents will demand to see pictures when we get back,” he said to me.

“Of course,” I replied, rolling my eyes. “How did you know I was here?”

“You left your laptop in the hotel room,” he said.

“You went through my laptop?!”

“There wasn’t even a password,” he shrugged. “Which is very irresponsible, may I add.”

“The password is set on the important files,” I retorted.

“Still irresponsible,” he replied and I had to agree.

“Now if I put my arms around you, will you slap me?” He asked seriously.

“Whatever,” I mumbled and gave him permission to put his arm around me.

He pulled me close to him so that my body was resting against his and my hand was on his chest.

For anyone looking, we would seem like a loving couple.

The driver snapped a few pictures of us in that position with the tower of London behind us. After he was done, we thanked him.

“Where are you going next?” Nathan asked me.

“The Big Ben and parliament,” I answered him.

“Scratch that,” he replied. “It’s 11. We need to get to Buckingham palace.”

“Why?” I asked. “I had Buckingham palace planned for after lunch.”

“You didn’t do your homework, I see” he replied. “At 11:30, it’s the Changing of the Guard. We can catch that if you move your ass now.”

Saying that, he led me to the hotel cab. I cursed myself for not finding out. During the car ride, I looked out at the street of London.

It took us 15 minutes to reach there and when I stepped out of the car, I was left gaping at the palace before me.

The pictures didn’t do this place justice. It was the epitome of beauty and elegance.

There were many tourists around as was to be expected.

She marveled over the palace for a good couple of minutes before Nathan came and stood by her.

“It’s beautiful, I know,” he said. “Now if you’re done drooling, let’s get some pictures and go.”

Her head snapped towards him. Get some pictures and go?

Was this guy serious? She had come here to enjoy, and that’s what she would do.

She wasn’t going to go to the Buckingham palace, just snap a couple of pictures with a man she loathed, and just leave.

“Well, you can go if you like, but I’m here to enjoy London and that’s what I’m going to do,” she informed him. “I’m going to have a good time.”

He studied her for a few minutes and then sighed.

“Whatever,” he said. “But I need to get pictures of us in a few more places.”

“I thought you wanted to show me the Changing of the Guard,”I reminded him.

“Oh right, come on,” he said and rushed with me right behind him.

We watched as the Queen’s guard marched in perfect orientation and to the rhythm of the band. There were soldiers mounted on horses and guards looked dapper in their uniforms. It was a colourful and pompous display of precision marching and music and lasted for a good 45 minutes or so.

After that was done, we toured the grounds of the palace. I wanted to have a tour of the palace itself but it turned out that it was not possible this time of the year.

“I wonder if the queen is in the palace right now,” I said suddenly.

“She is,” Nathan replied cooly.

“How do you know?”

See that?” He questioned, pointing to a flagpole atop the building. “That’s the royal standard. If it’s flying high, it means the queen is home.”

“Oh.” I responded.

We spent about half an hour more there with a tour guide who was telling us interesting facts about the palace and the royal family.

After that Nathan took me for lunch to a restaurant owned by one of his friend.

When the waiter came to get our order, Nathan ordered chicken parmesan, eggplant and Caesar salad. I looked at him like he had grown two heads.

“What is it?” He asked me.

“We are in London!” I told him. “We should be ordering their speciality, not dishes we eat every other day in New York.”

He raised his eyebrows. “Ok, what do you have in mind?”

“An eat-off” I squeaked.

“What’s the heck is an eat-off?” He asked. “You just made it up.”

“Yes I did,” I agreed. “So basically, you order your pick of some British dishes and I do the same.

You’ll have to eat what I order and I will do the same.”

“So if I order poison, will you eat it?” He had that mischevious smirk on his face.

“Is it part of the British cuisine?” I shot back.

“I’m sure I’ll find something horrible for you,” he said flipping through the British cuisine section of the menu.

When our order arrived there was Bangers and mash, shepherd’s pie, fish and chips, pork pie, steak and kidney pie, and Lancashire hotpot on our table.

Yea it was a lot but that’s on Nathan. When I told him it’d be too much for only the two of us, his response was,

“Oh excuse me, I forgot who I was with. Should I order you some grass?”

“Feed that to your whores,” I growled in response, but he just smirked. God, that smirk was so annoying! Wish I could wipe it out permanently.

We were digging in hungrily, and enjoying our lunch. Nathan and I commented on each dish, rating them and giving our opinion.

Nathan, surprisingly had a good sense of taste and knew a thing or two about cooking.

I can’t remember the last time I had so much fun eating lunch.

Fish and chips is not a British dish,” Nathan argued with me.

“Yes it is,” I informed him.

“Nope, we get it everywhere. It’s popular worldwide.”

“Yes it is, but it originated in Britain.”+

“I honestly thought it was American.” He said. I rolled my eyes at that.

We shared food and ate from each others plates. Nathan was giving his take on the shepherd pie that I had ordered. It was basically meat, minced with mashed potato crush.

“The British have so many pie’s,” Nathan exclaimed after we had finished lunch.

“They sure do,” I agreed.

“So, dessert?” He asked and I looked at him in disbelief.

“Aren’t you full?” I asked, because I sure was.

“There always is place for dessert in my belly,” he told me. “Or are you too worried that you’re going to get fat?” He teased me.
“Fine,” I gave in.

“Apple pie?” He asked.

“No, that’s too heavy. Something light and British.”

“Apple pie is British,” he retorted but I ignored him.

I went for a slice of Bakewell tart while he ordered a Banoffee pie. He began stealing from my plate and I returned the favour.

After lunch we continued our touring. I convinced Nathan to let go of the car and take the bus with me.

He was reluctant at first but then gave in. We visited the Big Ben and then the British museum.

Nathan seemed very interested in what the guide was saying in the museum, paying attention to every little thing, curious and fascinated by the exhibits.

“Never took you for a history person,” I muttered to him.

“You don’t know anything about me,” he replied and I had to agree. I really didn’t.

Nathan was a good traveling companion, and we had great fun together.

All our previous awkwardness and dislike for each other was forgotten and we both bonded together or so I felt.

He was great when he wasn’t being a jerk. More fun and exciting.

He had planned a visit to the London eye and it was marvellous. It offered the most spectacular view of the city. Since Nathan had booked us a Skip-the-line ticket, we didn’t have to wait in the awfully long line. He even rented a private capsule for us.

After the London eye, he dragged us both to the hotel much to my displeasure. It was still early, barely 5:30 in the evening.

I still wanted to visit the National gallery and the Two Tates. I was a huge fan of art and not visiting the world famous art galleries was a big no-no.

When I told Nathan this, he simply replied with “tomorrow” and pushed me into the suite and told me to go and take a shower.

When I stepped out of the shower, draped in a bathrobe, I saw him sitting on the couch with his phone, dressed in a jersey and fresh jeans.

I was confused as to why was he dressed like he was going out.

His eyes shot up and wandered over my body, making me realise that I was only in a bathrobe.

“Well don’t just stand there,” he said breaking the silence. “Go get dressed.”

“Dressed? Where are we going, Nathan?”

“I got us tickets to the soccer game,” he said with a slight grin.

I was a huge fan of soccer. I even played on my school soccer team and Man City was my favourite club, the Spurs came in second.

So to say I was elated was an understatement.

“Really? Which game?” I asked, trying not to sound like a squeaky teenager.

“Tottenham Hotspur vs Southampton” he shrugged and I had to stop myself from bouncing up and down.

“Dad said you were a fan of soccer and to take you to see a game.” He continued.

“You don’t like soccer?” I asked.

“No, I prefer basketball,”
“It’s ok to like two different sports.” I told him. “See, I love soccer, but I also like hockey.”

“Hmm, and you play some really good tennis,” he added and thankfully I didn’t blush at his compliment.

“Well let’s see if today’s game can turn me into a fan,” he continued.

“I really hope I get to see Harry play!” Oh did I mention that I was a huge fan of the English captain Harry Kane?

“My attorney Harry?” Nathan looked at me in disbelief.

“What? No silly! The English National team captain, Harry.”

“The prince? He plays soccer? I never heard of that,”

“No, not Prince Harry, Harry Kane!” I said.

“So the British have a prince, a singer, a footballer and a fictional character, all named Harry? How many Harries do the Brits need?”

I just rolled my eyes at his question and go in the closet to get changed.

Since I hadn’t packed any of my soccer jerseys, the only jersey I had with me was a white hockey, Toronto Maple Leafs away Jersey.

I paired it with denim shorts and tucked the front of the jersey into the shorts. I pulled my hair in a messy bun and wore my black boots.

I finished dressing and came out to where Nathan was sitting.

“You know,” he begin, “for a three day trip, you sure did pack a lot of shoes.”

“Let’s go,” I said and headed for the door, not bothering to answer him.
———————–

We pulled up at the Tottenham home ground and made our way to the seats.

We were in the VIP section, though you couldn’t expect anything less from Nathan.

On our way here, he insisted on buying a lot of burgers and fries and the lot, not that I protested.

Since it was a home game, the stadium was flooded with Spurs fans. The game was yet to begin.

“So, who are you rooting for?” Nathan leaned in and asked.

“Spurs,” I answered him.

“Really? Kind of difficult to tell with the maple leafs attire”

“It was the only jersey I had,” I defended myself.

“Oh I just thought that you got the wrong message.” He responded with a smirk.

“Whatever,” I replied.

“I’m supporting Southampton by the way,” he told me.

“You don’t even know anything about them,” I retorted.

“I know that they are going to win since you’ve cursed their opponents with your charm,”
“Oh, we’ll see,” I responded. “You want to bet?”

“Sure,” he replied. “What are you going to give me when I win?”

“Don’t be so confident,” I told him. “Loser will have to listen to everything the winner says tomorrow.”

“Deal. I’m already making a list of things to make you do tomorrow. Everything and anything you said, right?”

“Oh shut up now,” I chided him. “The game is starting.”
……….

Half time ended and Southampton was leading 1-0. And Nathan wouldn’t shut up about it.

We were eating fries while he sat there with a smug look while celebrating his victory.

“You do know that there is a second half right,” I asked him.

“I know, but it’s not like you’re going to win,” he responded.

“Did you even watch the game?” I asked irritated. “We were clearly the better team on the field.”

“Did you even see the scoreboard?” He said mocking me. “We are clearly leading.”

“We’ll have a comeback you’ll see,” I told him confidently. “Too bad Harry is out injured.”

“Honey, no-one can help you win this game today. Whichever team I support always win. It’s a natural phenomena.”

……………..

“It was a last minute penalty, they didn’t deserve it,” Nathan was trying to argue but I wasn’t listening.

The Spurs defeated Southampton 2-1. My team had won and I was busy doing a tap dance around Nathan not caring who was watching me.

“Sore loser much,” I teased him.

“Whatever,” he grumbled.

“I won, you lost,”
“Yeah yeah, now let’s go,” he said and dragged me to the exit.

We got into the rental car with Nathan driving, the whole way I was celebrating my victory and he slumped over his defeat.

I wanted to go out and have fun but Nathan forcefully took me back to the hotel saying it was too late.

After reaching the hotel, we both got ready for bed.

Since we were both wide awake today, we realised the one bed problem.

“We are a married couple,” he said simply. “Sharing a bed is not a biggie.”

Says the same man who handed me rules of our marriage, ignored me the whole time, someone I’m not used to having a normal conversation with.

Sure today we both had a lot of fun together, but sharing a bed? I’m not sure about that yet.

“Yea sure,” I told him. I placed two pillows between us and made a barrier. “Your side, my side.”

“You’re such a child,” he huffed but got into bed with me. “Goodnight Hailey.”

“Goodnight Nathan.”
